Stuart W. Rose, Ph.D., has an 11-foot Bird of Paradise plant growing in his atrium, a rain water recycling system to cover most of his indoor water needs, and virtually zero utility bills. But a little over 10 years ago, he and his wife lived in a very different kind of home. Rose received his Bachelor of Architecture and his Bachelor of Science, Structural Engineering in 1961 from Kansas State University. After working as an architect for two firms in St. Louis, Mo., he attended University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned his Master of Architecture. Rose received his Ph.D. in Administration & Higher Education (focus Organization Development) in 1968 from Michigan State University, and has since held teaching posts at University of Nebraska, University of Cincinnati, and North Carolina State University. He also implemented a professional development program at the American Institute of Architects.
A revered marketing analyst, Rose has written over 15 books on the topic. His combined knowledge in marketing and architecture helped him lay the groundwork for Garden Atriums which, as of 2010, is home to 15 residents. Rose and Duncan live in Poquoson, VA. They host regular tours of Garden Atriums, which has received over 10,000 visitors in its eight-year history.
