Discovering Many Paths to Peace by Cassandra Curley

September and October were a blur as I pushed to beat the cold weather. From my calculations, in the five Cassandra Curley Walk for Peaceweeks on the road, I drove over 4000 miles and walked almost 500! And I wasn't only "walking the walk" but, I would have liked to have done more "talking the talk." I did get mentioned on International Peace Day, by the Shift Network, a Global Peace Initiative web site, got air time on KTUU in Anchorage, was able to attend some local gatherings and set up some small, meet-and-greets but, I haven't had as much time to dedicate to speaking engagements (I sure could use a publicist). Many of the conversations about Peace have been initiated through everyday encounters - motel employees and guests, passengers at the airport, pedestrians on the trails I walk and business owners and employees that I meet throughout the day. Whomever and however I can find a way to engage in dialogue.

Assimilating the surroundings has been challenging as well. To intimately experience so much of the country is an opportunity I do not take for granted. Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota offered many scenic trails that traversed well-planned communities, recreational areas and notable historic spots. As Peace and Unity is the purpose of this journey, it has become increasingly apparent that these well-used paths will be a crucial element in creating "CommUNITY" throughout the country. Most of these trails are populated, have been well-maintained or, are in development, but all are intended to encourage family and community activity and enhance lives. To sustain the current movement for "local" and encourage that growth to city and state will be vital in creating National Peace. Because I feel this growing network will continue to support connection to individuals as well as community and eventually, help create a sense of cohesiveness on a national level, I intend to illuminate and share this discovery long after this journey is complete. - In Peace!
